Multi Facet Leadership
By Dr. Richard C. Baiz, D.B.A.
As one is developing their skills for future use, in relations to having that true sense of purpose in life; it helps to figure out, if it is a natural born talent or one that was ingrained. The reason why it is important to know which of the two are good to know is because; rare one will ever lead if they do not have a fundamental conceptualization of their very own demeanor; intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically. As I’ve indicated in other writings it the exception rather than the rule when one can lead and know very little about their very own personal make up. The curiosity from scholars in the personal and development arena has been discussed and debated for decades the reason stems from the curiosity of what makes one tick. Plus, it is good to know how some people can lead, be placed in a role whereby people life’s are at stake and because we know very little about a particular leader all out disaster could be the outcome; case in point Hitler.

Individuals that embark upon roles without fully understanding the consequences involved will be in for a rude awakening; if there is not a solid foundation within their very own personal traits and characteristics. People who lead need to know their limitations, they need to know their skills level and they need to have some perspectives of their ethics. In order for people to follow the leader there must be a certain level of humility from the leader and a perception from the leader that she/he are caring noble characters that want to lead because they want to help people.

The issues of knowing whether or not one is a born leader versus a developed leader will be based on ______continued.

continued______ numerous variables; for example are we all born intelligent or are we taught to be “smart”. How can one lead if they do not have any type of an intellectual foundation. People that follow leaders are individuals who have bought into the message of the leader and are willing to sacrifice in order to move on without compromising the talent of leading. If one desires to be in position of progress without concessions then the effectiveness of the newly crowned leader will suffer and organizational mistakes are inevitable.

Often times people are placed in top roles; roles that are highly sensitive in nature and yet fail to see the big picture because they failed to conduct a meaningful reflective review of themselves as to how they got there in the first place. Therefore as they do evolve into important roles; mistakes occur and lack of integrity begins to play a role in positions that require the highest standards of ethics. This is why it remains to have a certain perspective of importance as not having full disclosure of one’s character could pose a problem down the road.

The Los Angeles Lakers recently won the National Basketball Association (NBA) Champion, one of their key players Kobe Bryant has been working hard at being the leader that most knew he had the potential to be. Now Kobe is a phenomenal basketball player however as a leader of the team cohesively working together as a team; his skills were yet to materialize. While talking with his coach about leading the team, Kobe told his coach I could lead this team to another championship; making it fifteen for the Lakers; which is also quite impressive. His coach another phenomenal individual with ten NBA champions told his young phenomenal basketball star that if he did not make change to his basketball playing style his basketball peers would “not follow you”. Kobe needed to change the style of his basketball execution by getting others involved, becoming inclusive and the team working together toward the goal they so desired. Kobe in my view is a natural born basketball player with a God given talent. Though he works extremely hard at his profession probably putting more time than most and always working hard at perfecting his craft Kobe still was not where aspired to be; he wanted to do better and he wanted another championship. Therefore he needed to go beyond the execution of basketball as he knew he needed to craft a new style of playing that a team could buy off on. He became a good listener, student of the game even though he already had three champions. Kobe listened to his coach and was open to be taught more than he already knew in order to become a champion. In this case Kobe Bryant was both born and taught development and he also developed more personally as an individual whereby people respect him highly as a premier professional.
