Leadership Skills -- 3 Things Every Manager Must Possess

There is an African proverb that says, “It is not what you call me but what I answer to that matters.” If you want to excel in your job as a manager or even as a supervisor, you will have to first embrace the truth of that proverb. Some people are satisfied with merely gaining a title, while others are more concerned with achieving results.

A true leader is interested in accomplishing the mission; not in titles. Therefore, if you are going to excel, forget the title on your business card (especially if it says Manager) and embrace your role of leader. Any leader worth his salt will first tell you that you can not manage people; you can only manage things. People, however, must be lead by inspiration.

While there are many skills that a good leader must have, there are 3 that are foundational. It doesn’t matter how fancy the house, or what amenities it has; if the foundation is not solid eventually it will all crumble. The same is true of a leader. It doesn’t matter what title you are given, what degrees you possess, what floor your office is on, what type of wood your desk is made of, or even what philosophy you embrace. If you don’t have the foundational necessities, your efforts as a leader will be ineffective.

Do not waste your time trying to answer the debate on whether a leader is born or made. Better yet, invest your time wisely by investigating the foundational principles of leadership. If the cornerstone of real ______continued.

continued______ estate is the 3-L’s (location, location, location) then the cornerstone of is the 3-P’s. What is the 3-P’s of leadership? Passion! Passion! Passion! is having a passion for the purpose, a passion for the people, and a passion for the process.

A passion for the purpose means that the leader understands the company’s mission or the team’s goal. However, understanding the company’s mission is not equivalent to a memorized slogan obtained from some official document. Passion implies something much deeper. A leader with passion for the purpose is a leader who is one with the mission because he has experienced it himself. You can not effectively guide people to a place you have not yourself been; as well as, people will be reluctant to go to a place that you are not sold on yourself. Remember, people can sniff out a phony a mile away.

A passion for the people means that the leader regards the people more than himself. In order to fulfill this requirement, the success of the leader will be heavily contingent upon whether he has accomplished the first “P” – passion for purpose. A leader of any group is like the leader of an expedition; people are trusting in your guidance because they believe that your expertise is the result of you having already made the journey. As a result of having experienced the journey, your motivation should be to expose your followers to the benefits you have already derived. The leader is, therefore, completely committed to the well being of his followers and their safe arrival at the intended destination.

A passion for the process means the leader has a healthy respect for the process. While all roads may lead to China, the leader has a particular road that he has chosen. It is not a randomly chosen option but a well calculated choice. The leader has put painstaking effort in doing his research to determine the actions that are going to get the best result.

The evidence of the leader’s do diligence can be seen when asked, “Why are we taking this course of action versus another?” A leader will give an answer that demonstrates he has a handle on the principles that govern the intended outcome. You can not put a price on a leader’s expertise. It is because of expertise that we are willing to pay the doctor’s expensive fee instead of listening to the suggestion of our well meaning friend when we have an excruciating pain in our side that won’t go away.

A good leader is the product of a good foundation.
